Jumping the Broom
(2005)

Jumping the Broom is a short solo created for Gesel Mason (formerly of Liz Lerman Dance Exchange) and her No Boundaries ProjectNo Boundaries seeks to expand the audience’s concept of Black dance through the performance of a program featuring a range of solos from noted contemporary choreographers including David Roussève, Jawole Zollar, and Donald McKayle.  Jumping the Broom is Roussève’s personal reaction to the 2004 elections and it juxtaposes the ban on slave marriage with the contemporary ban on gay marriage.  (Jumping a broom is a ritual of forbidden marriage performed by slaves.)  David Roussève wrote, choreographed, and directed this work, which premiered at Washington D.C.’s Dance Place prior to national and international touring.
