Walking on Clouds
Walking on Clouds, commissioned and performed by two Cleveland dance companies: Dancing Wheels (composed of ‘stand up’ and ‘sit down’ dancers) and Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theater (composed of African-Americans). The companies wanted to explore what people of color and the differently-abled have in common. After interviewing both companies, Roussève focused on the invisibility they both cited. Thematically Walking was carved from the dancers own stories, many of which are included in the final work. The 35-minute piece weaves text, vocal chanting, and dance to put a ‘face’ on the socially ‘faceless’ performers. In the New York Times, noted choreographer Dianne McIntyre mentioned this piece as an important work in the current field of ‘Black dance.’ Roussève wrote, choreographed and directed Walking and wrote/performed lyrics to some of the rap music used in the piece.
